A penthouse located at One Hyde Park in Knightsbridge, London has sold for a record breaking £140 million (219 million USD).  Beating the previous record of £115 million (180 million USD) for a property purchased at St James’s Square, Westminster in 2008.

The six bedroomed apartment features bullet proof windows, a panic room and views across the Serpentine.

The new owner, whose identity remains a closely guarded secret, has access to 24 hour room service from the neighbouring Mandarin Oriental Hotel and protection from SAS trained security guards.

One Hyde Park has a total of eighty six properties, starting at £20 million (31 million USD), with completion due in December.  Sixty five percent of the units have already been sold although further sales were suspended for twelve months due to the global economic downturn.

Recent reports show new waves of buyers in London are appearing from the Middle East and Nigeria on the back of rising oil prices.

Trevor Abrahamson of Glentree Estates, one of the subagents for One Hyde Park, commented; “The super-rich buyers have returned to the London market in droves over the past six months, sending home prices to new highs.  London is the capital of capitals. Even international businessmen with no interests in London want to have a home here.”

However, according to new figures by the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors, the overall housing market has started to fall after months of growth.
